This is a section where you can find information about particular functions or concepts of the WorldOpinion website. In
case that you can’t find some information or don’t understand our description, please contact us.
Principles and conception
WorldOpinion is an Internet based project. It is a place for expressing opinions on global Issues and discovering what the
rest of the World thinks. Users respond on various questions. Each question and its related features (its discussions,
statistics) are called an Issue. Users can choose from two answers on a particular question. A demonstration of global
results can be observed in the Interactive Map, which graphically shows opinions of countries around the World.
Additionally, users can check out Detailed Statistics which show how the opinions differ in case of different age,
education, gender, religion, ethnic group and living area.
Voting and system of counting
To generate the most relevant results, votes are not simply counted together. The calculation of global result is based on
different number of inhabitants in each country. From this number is derived a coefficient which gives to each country a
different weight of its opinion (e.g. China’s overall opinion has different weight than Vatican’s). This system is fundamental
for creating global result relevant. Imagine if there were more voters from Vatican than from China, the smallest country in
the World would contribute to the global result more than the biggest one. The coefficient system maintains the countries’
real contributions to the global opinion. And how are users matched with their nationalities? The system recognizes the
country where the user is at the moment. However, users fill out their nationality during the registration. Therefore, those
who are registered can vote from wherever they are and still vote for their country.
Calculation of the global result
Calculation of the global result is based on this formula:

Home Page
Home Page shows mainly an Interactive Map related to particular Issue. You can browse the Map as well as vote for the
Issue. Examples of two comments to most discussed Issues are situated below the Map. Finally, there is a box with
another Issue on the right from the Map.
List of Issues
When you click on "Issues" in the Menu, a list of all released Issues will show up. You can choose whether you want to
see Closed Issues or Opened Issues, select additional sorting and number of Issues shown on one page. This can be
managed in the appropriate panel either at the top or at the bottom of the layout. You can directly vote from the List of
Issues.
Issue Detail
The detail of Issue shows a description of its question, an interactive map, a global result and a result in the country you
have voted for. There is also a box with listing of all options how to share the Issue with others. Additionally, you can
directly enter the discussion related to the Issue or be linked to its detailed results. Finally, there are two latest comments
in its discussion displayed at the bottom of the layout.
Detailed Results
Each Issue has its Detailed Results section where you can observe diversity in opinions based on different Age, Religion,
Ethnicity etc. The access to this section is limited to registered users only. This is because the registered users are the
ones who actually make the Detailed Results. All statistics shown in this section are based on information given during
the registration process. Therefore, it can happen that there wouldn’t be enough votes from registered users, so the
statistics wouldn’t be shown. However, they will be presented as soon as sufficient number of registered users vote.
Interactive World Map
Interactive Map is a tool used to demonstrate graphically how the opinion differs in countries around the World. Countries
which have the same opinion are colored in the same way. Every country’s name and its current results will show up
when you point a cursor at it. You can both zoom and scroll the map.

Each comment on which there has been reaction, has a link to the reaction located below its text. On the other hand, the
reaction has a link to the comment on which it reacts above its text.
